Costa Rica is home to nearly 6% of the world’s biodiversity, and Golfo Dulce sits within one of the country’s most ecologically concentrated regions. As one of the few tropical fjords on earth, its deep, enclosed waters create unusually calm marine conditions bordered by rainforest, mangrove systems, and protected coastal corridors.
These waters support protected navigation, thriving fisheries, and year-round sportfishing that has produced 90+ world records. They also serve as a year-round shark sanctuary and seasonal refuge for humpback whales from July through November. The gulf is also a critical habitat within the Eastern Tropical Pacific, connected to a broader conservation network that includes Corcovado National Park, Piedras Blancas National Park, and the Golfito National Wildlife Refuge.
